Childhood And Early Life
Actress Gladys George was born on the 13 September 1904 in Patten, Maine into a family of English Shakespearean actors. Her parents were Sir Arthur Evans and Lady Clare Evans.
Rise To Stardom
Her English parents were touring actors, and at the age of three, George was part of their act known as The Three Clare’s, their family stage name. She made her Broadway debut in 1918 in The Betrothal. She then worked with Pauline Frederick’s touring company, and in 1919, George moved to Hollywood. Her first lead role was in the silent film Red Hot Dollars (1919). Her particular good looks were sought after in the silent movie era, but after an accident which left her face scarred, she returned to the stage for a while.
Career
In the 1930s, George again worked in Hollywood and had a role in Straight Is the Way (1934). As well as working in film, she continued working on Broadway, appearing in Personal Appearance. Her role in the movie Valiant Is The Word for Carri (1936) won her an Oscar nomination. Other films she appeared in during the 1930s include: They Gave Him a Gun (1937). Madame X (1937). Love is a Headache (1938). Marie Antoinette (1938). The Roaring Twenties (1939). A Child is Born (1939). The Maltese Falcon (1941) and The Hard Way 1943. During the 1940s and the 1950s, George played supporting roles including Flamingo Road (1949) He Ran All The Way (1951). Lullaby of Broadway 195 and Detective Story 1951. Personal Life
Gladys George’s first husband was Ben Erway. They married in 1922 and divorced in 1930. She then married Edward Fowler who divorced her in 1933. Her third husband was Leonard Penn who she married in 1935. When George was forty-six, she married Kenneth Bradley, a hotel bellboy.
Gladys George died age 50 in Los Angeles on the 8 December 1954.
