Michelle Williams is an Award-winning American actress who earned her recognition in films such as the 1998-2003 series titled, ‘Dawson’s Creek,' ‘Brokeback Mountain ‘in 2005 and ‘Blue Valentine’ in 2010.

Early Life

Michelle Williams is a daughter of Carla Ingrid and Larry Richard Williams, born on September 9, 1980, in Kalispell Montana. At the age of nine, the family moved to San Diego where she became interested in acting at an early age after she saw the film, ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.’

At the age of 15, she signed emancipation from her parents so that she could pursue her acting career without interference from child labor work laws. She enrolled at Santa Fe Christian School in California which she left after grade nine and later graduated from a correspondence school with a GED.

Career

Michelle Williams started acting in early 1990’s with a guest appearance on television programs such as, ‘Home Improvement’ and ‘Step by Step.’ In 1993, she played the character of Bridget Bowers in ‘Baywatch’ and later performed in an adventure film, ‘Lassie’ in 1994. The performance followed another role in ‘Species’ where she portrayed the character of Sil, an alien-human.

In 1996, she played in the television movie, ‘My Son Is Innocent’ followed by a more dramatic work as a member of Susan’s geek clique in, ‘Killing Mr. Griffin’. Williams moved to California where she played in the ‘Dawson’s Creek.' Unhappy with the roles she received; she collaborated alongside several actors and wrote ‘Blink’ in 1977.

From 1993-2003, Michelle Williams starred alongside James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson in a teen drama series, ‘Dawson’s Creek’ who raided her fame. At the age of 17, she played the character of Jen Lindley in a semi-autobiographical series based on Kevin Williamson’s childhood. 

Moreover, she acted a slasher movie, ‘Halloween H2O: 20 Years Later’ in 1998. A year later, she played alongside Kristen Dunst in a comedy titled, ‘Dick’ and took a more challenging work in ‘But I’m a Cheerleader'. Williams entered the Robbins World Cup Championship of Futures Trading in 1997, where she won 900% earning her rank as the third highest winner of the competition since it started in 1984.

In 2000, Michelle Williams appeared in an HBO television movie, ‘If These Walls Could Talk 2’ which presented a lesbian couple in two different time periods. A year later, she co-starred with Anna Fried in ‘Me without You’ followed by a starring role as Christina Ricci in the film, ‘Prozac Nation’ based on the autobiography by Elizabeth Wurtzel in 2002.

In 2003, she made an appearance in ‘The United States of Leland’ which received negative criticisms. Her performance followed a role in ‘The Station Agent’ which led to a nomination for Screen Actors Guild Award for best cast in Motion Picture.

After the end of ‘Dawson’s Creek’ in 2003, Michelle Williams portrayed the character of Varya in ‘The Cherry Orchard’ at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. The following year, Williams played the role of Lana in ‘Land of Plenty’ which earned her a nomination for the 22nd Independent Spirit Awards as the Best Female Lead. 

In 2005, she appeared in ‘Imaginary Heroes’ and starred in ‘A Hole in One’ followed by a starring role in ‘The Baxter’. She also gained public recognition for a film, ‘Brokeback Mountain’ which depicted homosexual relationship and later played the role of Alma in ‘The Station Agent’ which received 8 Oscar Nominations and won three accolades at the 78th Academy Awards.

Evidently, the dress Michelle Williams wore to the Academy Awards was cited by the Cosmopolitan magazine in March 2006 as one of the Best dresses of all time. In 2007, she played the role of Michael Pitt’s girlfriend in ‘The Hawk Is Dying’ and appeared in ‘The Hottest State ‘a film adapted from a 1996 book. 

Additionally, in 2008, she played the character of blonde known as S in ‘Deception’ fooled by a remarkable performance in ‘Wendy and Lucy’ which earned her a Toronto Film Critics Association Awards as the Best Actress. Notably, in 2009, Williams co-starred with Gael Garcia Bernal in ‘Mammoth’ followed by a psychological thriller ‘Shutter Island’ and ‘Shutter Island’ in 2010

Michelle Williams took her next performance in 2011 in ‘Take This Waltz’ followed by a starring role in ‘OZ the Great and Powerful’ a Walt Disney Picture film she played as Glinda the Good Witch in 2013. In 2015, she starred in ‘Blackbird’ which earned her a Tony Award Nomination. 

Gleefully, in the same year, she starred in ‘Certain Women’ and ‘Manchester by the Sea’ which won her a New York Film Critics Circe Award and an Academy Award Nomination for the best-supporting actress. In 2017, she became the face of Louis Vuitton Spring/ Summer Sunglasses collection.

Achievements

Remarkably, Michelle Williams has received several awards and nominations including the 2008 Toronto Film Critics Association Awards as the Best Actress. By and large, she got a New York Film Critics Circe Award and alongside an Academy Award Nomination for the best-supporting actress in 2015.

Personal Life

Michelle Williams started dating Heath Ledger in 2004 and gave birth to his daughter on October 28, 2005. The couple ended their relationship in September 2007. Ledger died in January 2008 from combined drug intoxication which got the family a lot of public and media attention. On July 2008, she started dating Spike Jonze a relationship that ended up in September 2009.
